Jasmine Williams Named Female Athlete of the Year at Alabama State Games

In a ceremony with Gov. Kay Ivey standout pickleball player from Montgomery, Jasmine Williams, has been named one of the Alabama State Games Athletes of the Year. This prestigious recognition highlights her exceptional sportsmanship, dedication, and achievements as a pickleball player.

Williams, an accountant in our audit department, originally took up pickleball to stay in shape. Her commitment and passion for the game have propelled her to become one of the top athletes in the state. Williams is also an ex-Marine, bringing the same discipline and perseverance to her sport that she exhibited in her military service.

Gov. Kay Ivey lauded the athletes, saying, “Congratulations to all the outstanding athletes of the year of the Alabama State Games. The sportsmanship and exceptional performances exhibited by these players embody the hardworking spirit of our great state. Truly, there’s nothing like the Alabama State Games — where the best of Alabama’s talent and determination is showcased for all to see.”

Williams joins Carlos Mathews (Track & Field, Huntsville) as the Adult Male and Female Athletes of the Year. Mitch Conroy (Table Tennis, Anniston) and Jordyn Hill (Archery, Fort Novosel) were named the Youth Male and Female Athletes of the Year, respectively.

The athletes had the honor of carrying the torch for the 41st Alabama State Games in Birmingham, on June 7-9.

Laura Creel Burt, the Alabama State Games Executive Director, expressed her admiration for the athletes, stating, “I have a great deal of respect for all the athletes who go for gold as part of the Alabama State Games. But to read the nominations and then having the opportunity to meet these four was amazing. They truly stand out amongst their peers and deserve to be recognized and celebrated.”

Nominations for the awards came from a wide range of sources, including coaches, parents, commissioners, community members, tournament directors, volunteers, and competitors. The selection criteria encompass overall achievements, involvement in the Games, community engagement, effort in competition, promotion of their sport, sportsmanship, and their attitude on and off the field. The ability to overcome adversity and how they represent themselves also play a significant role in their nomination.
